<![CDATA[Mankato Free Press: Obituaries]]> (1)

Jeannie Youngs, age 86, of North Mankato, passed away peacefully at home in her sleep on Friday, May 17, 2024.Jeannie was born on July 6, 1937, in Holbæk, Denmark to Fanny Nielsen and Aksel Kristoffersen. She moved to America in 1960 and her home in North Mankato remained her primary residence until her death. Jeannie was very proud of her Danish heritage and liked to collect Danish souvenirs and knickknacks (even drinking coffee out of a mug emblazoned with a Danish flag and inscribed with the words: I know I'm perfect. I'm Danish!). She would periodically return to Denmark on vacation to visit family; and at times her family would also come to visit her here in the States. Jeannie worked at Mankato Corporation, now known as Perfecseal, in Mankato until her retirement in 2005. She remained close friends with many of her co-workers and would continue to visit with them well after retirement, either on the phone or meeting them for breakfast at Perkins. One of Jeannie's favorite past times was gardening. She would often spend several hours a day planting flowers, trimming bushes, and decorating her yard with various cute ornaments. Jeannie also enjoyed what she referred to as "putzing around the house" and making the inside of her house as nice and tidy as the outside. She loved to go on casual bike rides throughout lower North Mankato, often to Spring Lake Park, for exercise; and during her retirement she occasionally liked going to the casino for some modest gambling fun. Jeannie had a heart of gold. She showed an unwavering, unconditional love for her three boys, no matter the circ*mstances; and even in times when money was tight, her sons never went without or felt deprived in any way. Jeannie was also an avid animal lover. She had many pets throughout her lifetime and loved them all, especially her beloved cat Shirley, with whom Jeannie spent 21 joyous years until Shirley's passing in 2017. Jeannie's compassion for animals was incredibly deep, and she would become visibly upset at even the thought of their suffering. Jeannie is survived by her son Erik Youngs of North Mankato. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Eleanor; her brothers Max and Jan; and her sons Micheal Youngs and John Youngs. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Memorials are preferred to the Blue Earth Nicollet County Humane Society (benchs.org).

<![CDATA[Mankato Free Press: Obituaries]]> (28)

John R. Miller, 74, left this world Monday, May 13th at 12:30 am at Mayo Hospital in Mankato, MN, surrounded by an abundance of love. Due to a fall at his home in 2023, he battled ongoing medical issues while living at Hillcrest Rehabilitation Center in Mankato.John was born on July 1, 1949 to Corrine and George and he, along with his other siblings, Sondra (Ronald Von Arb); Bruce (Sharon); "Cookie"/Jerilyn (Jerry Wilking), Tom (Nancy), his twin sister and best friend, Joan (Jerry Stalberger), Doug, and Dan (Valerie), grew up in St. Clair, MN. John spent his childhood playing sports, shooting marbles, slingshots, hunting and fishing. After graduation in 1967 he went to work at Brown Printing in Waseca and met Sue Manthe. They eventually married and moved to Janesville, where they lived until they had Jeremy. They then moved to Pemberton and a year later welcomed Jessica, or "Jessie", as her Dad affectionately called her, and two years later, Sara. Sue and John divorced but remained good friends. John was a loving and proud Dad and spent much of his time going to their sporting events, taking them to visit family, fishing, hunting, shopping, auctions and taking drives. Many hours were spent outside playing baseball, football, and a fan favorite, "Deer Hunter", which involved John perched on steps, lobbing balls at the scattering kids, trying to tag them. John truly loved to make people laugh and was a prankster. He was well known as the Uncle who came with a disclaimer. His kids would often tell him, "here's the line, Dad, here's you crossing it" or lovingly forewarn him to "behave". He had a heart of gold and loved to talk to people, tell stories and jokes, and light heartedly tease people, just to see them smile. John's ultimate pride and joys were his kids, Jeremy, Jessica (Brian), and Sara (Jim), and his grandkids, Ryley, Sydney, Kinsley, Greyden and Logan. The stories they will hear of their "Poppa" could never do him justice and he will forever be missed and deeply loved. We are comforted to know he was greeted in Heaven by his Mom and Dad, Bruce, Cookie, Ronnie, Jerry, and Brian. No doubt it was quite the welcome. His family wishes to thank everyone for their love and support over the last year and invite you to his visitation (9:30 am), funeral service (10:30 am) and lunch at Immaculate Conception Church (101 Church St) in St. Clair, MN on June 10, 2024. Burial will be held at a later date.

He was raised in the Saint James area where he worked on several family farms growing up. He talked about growing up in a farmhouse with no indoor plumbing, frozen bedpans, and running to the outhouse in the winter. He also told stories of wilder times. As a young man he was a rebel without a cause and loved fast cars, motorcycles, and guns.In 1966, Harlan joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War. While serving in Vietnam, he was injured when a mine exploded, and his arm was hit by shrapnel. On January 13, 1968, Harlan was married to Arlene Jeanette Flaherty. After the wedding, they made their home in Jacksonville, NC where he was assigned to Camp Lejeune and later served a year at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. While in Frankfurt, Harlan logistically supported Operation Desert Storm and made a trip to Kuwait to inspect Russian built tanks and artillery that had been seized or disabled. During his time in the military, Harlan was recognized with numerous awards and medals which he would just shrug off as being no big deal. Harlan retired from the US Army in 1991 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3.Harlan and Arlene settled in Saint James, MN upon retirement from the US Army, but it wasn't long before he returned to school using his military educational benefits earned under 2 different GI Bills. Friends and family alike looked up to him for his personality, work ethic, natural mechanical ability, and big heart. His passions were shooting (Trap and Skeet), hunting, fishing, reloading ammo, drinking coffee, and watching westerns. He especially enjoyed his big game hunting days in Alaska and Germany, the family hunting lodge in Ardmore, South Dakota, and fishing for walleye on houseboat trips in Canada. He had a love for firearms in general and was a Lifetime Member of the NRA. He enjoyed being involved with youth shooting sports and hunter safety programs teaching the younger generation safety and skills of marksmanship.Harlan is survived by his wife, Arlene (Flaherty), of 56 years, along with his son and daughter, Michael Hanson and Jackie of Grand Forks, ND and Beth Hanson of St. Peter, MN. Papa worked as a diesel mechanic for several companies but after a triple bypass heart surgery he retired from True Value where he had worked for 12 years having started at age 65, the time most people retire. While working full time he and his wife Judy owned and operated "Happy Cooker Catering Service" where they roasted hogs and turkeys for over 27 years.Papa enjoyed traveling. He liked going to district, state, regional, and international Eagle conventions/conferences and cherished the many camping trips he went on with friends and family. He was extremely proud of being a member of Mankato Aerie 269 for 44 years having attained the positions of local, district and Minnesota State Worthy President which he attained a year before his body started to slow down after many years of hard work. He was also a member of North Mankato American Legion 518 and former member of the Moose and the Masons.Papa also enjoyed hunting. He looked forward to his time up north each year deer hunting with Dick Henry and the guys and getting into their "sock" while playing cards. He had a bucket wish come true when his son, Steve, and his father-in-law, Dan, went elk hunting in Montana.Papa was very proud of his many collectable John Deere tractors and was thrilled when he was able to go to Waterloo, Iowa with family to the John Deere plant and museum.Furthermore, Papa enjoyed watching his westerns, Mash, and the Vikings where he coached from his recliner.Papa loved the eight kids in his blended family: Rick, Lois, Paul, Cindy (Robert) Jones, Steve (Bridget), Tricia (Pat) Tobin, Kara (Greg) Pipes, Tim Anderson and special daughter Gina Farchette. He was proud to tell everyone he had twenty-three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Marlene Spencer, Zobie Spencer, Bev Raimann, and brother-in-law Don Mann.We are so grateful for all our family's help during this time and for our dear friends John and Janelle Cedergren, Earl and Sharon Taylor, his Happy Chef Friday Breakfast cronies, and Eagle special friends Ed and Linda Connell, Ron and Maureen Malz, Bruce and Cindy Meyer and many more who without their support and encouragement he would have never been able to attain the privilege of being the 2022-2023 Minnesota State Worthy President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. We are also grateful for all the Mankato Clinic staff over the past years and the Mayo Hospice nurses who, along with children and grandchildren, were with us in the last stages of his life.If you would like to say your "see ya laters" face-to-face, visitation will be at Northview Funeral Home Thursday, May 9th from 4:00pm-7:00pm with a viewing from 4:00pm-5:00pm. Final farewell service begins at 11:00am on Friday, May 10th at Messiah Lutheran Church with visitation prior from 10:00am-11:00am. Mary Grace (Norris) Rosenow, age 89, formerly of St. Peter, MN, passed away peacefully in Champlin, MN, Thursday, May 2, 2024. She was "home" in her assisted living facility for the final week of her journey, lovingly ushered to the next place by family members and compassionate caregivers.A Celebration of Life will be held at Champlin United Methodist Church, 921 Downs Road, Champlin, MN, at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, May 11, 2024 with visitation one hour prior. A private graveside service and burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery, St. Peter, Minnesota. Livestreaming of the service will be available at www.saintpeterfuneralhome.comSt. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials would be welcome in Mary's memory to American Parkinson's Disease Association or Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.Born January 23, 1935, the first-born daughter of Edmond Hand Norris and Grace Bainbridge Norris, Mary's very first adventure was a horsedrawn sleigh ride through deep snow to get from the family home in Villard, MN, to the hospital in Glenwood in time for her arrival. She grew up in Long Prairie, MN, where she was the homecoming queen at Long Prairie High School in 1951, graduating in 1952. Most importantly, this is where Mary met her true love and life partner, Darrel Dean Rosenow. Darrel and Mary married shortly after high school and together attended University of Minnesota for two years before returning to Long Prairie where Darrel joined the Norris family hatchery business and Mary dedicated herself to raising their growing young family. After brief stints in Brainerd and Gaylord, the family settled in St. Peter, where Mary and Darrel lived for more than 40 years until his death in 2019. Mary focused her energies on raising her family, and over the years also worked as a hospital aide, sold fresh vegetables from her plentiful garden, managed the local fabric store, and served as the receptionist for a local doctor. After retiring in 1991, Mary loved spending time with her children and their spouses as well as her five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In her active years, Mary enjoyed gardening, golfing, skiing, painting, projects at the cabin, and swimming in the lake. She and Darrel were square dancers for more than 40 years and members of the St. Peter Promenaders. Even as she aged and lived with Parkinson's disease, Mary continued to knit and quilt and bake with gusto. She did not allow the progressive disease to define her but rather she faced it with courage, dignity, and spunk, up until the very last days of her life.In 2019, Mary relocated to Anoka and then Champlin, MN, to be closer to family. For the last five years of her life, Mary's primary caregiver was her daughter-in-law, Kathy, whom Mary referred to as her "right hand person". The two formed a special bond that was evident to all.Mary is survived by her sons, Darrel Dean, Jr. (Lucy) of Minneapolis and Charles (Kathleen) of Ramsey; son-in-law, Dr. Mark Heggem of Aitkin; grandchildren, Joshua (Shauna) Heggem of Battle Lake, MN, Andrew Heggem of Madison, TN, Nathan (Matt Dittes) Heggem of Brooklyn, NY, Fuhua Ding (John Thode) of Shorewood, MN, and Taylor Rosenow of Coon Rapids, MN; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Jeanie Trigg of Capitola, CA; many cousins, nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Edmond and Grace Norris; her husband of 66 years, Darrel Dean Rosenow, Sr.; eldest son, David Rosenow; daughter, Elizabeth ("Liz") Heggem; brothers, Paul Norris and Edmond Norris, Jr. and sisters, Nell Dobbs, and Susan Ossian.

She was quick to tell listeners that she worked 11½ hours a night for $0.95 an hour. She worked as a waitress at the Nicollet Hotel at a time when that was a white linen tablecloth type of dining. It was there she learned to appreciate the joy of setting a pretty table. She carried that with her the rest of her life. She worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Richard Larson for many years. And, she worked at Hiniker Cab Company as a shipping clerk until her retirement in 1990. She credits her long life as proof that hard work won't kill you.The loved ones that preceded her in death were her parents Bea and Izzy, her only sibling Elaine and her husband Rodney Dickmeyer and their son-in-law Dr Alan Magnuson, sons-in-law Clem Fischer, Ken Rydeen, Oliver Winkleman, Thomas Richardson, and two ex-husbands Julean Olson and George Krider. She was the oldest surviving grandchild of Helmer and Myrtle Leverson and DeMoss and Mary Gravelle. The large blended family she leaves behind include her daughters, Pat and Royce Kilmer, Donna and Robert Peterson, Barbara (Krider) Richardson, a niece Sandy Magnuson, 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 22 great-great-grandchildren.She never met a dog or cat she didn't like and she loved to watch birds. She valued her independence and found great joy in her friends.Shirley was well known in her circle of family and friends for her cliques. "The Golden Years!" which she wanted everyone to know weren't really that 'Golden'. "Busier than a cranberry merchant.", and when she was really sick, "One foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel." She also loved to bake banana bread and share with people she cared about.Any memorials will be sent to the shelter in northern Minnesota that just rescued 120 cats from a hoarding situation.
