Unleashing Innovation in Indian Architecture by Reviving the Tradition of Textiles for Climate Adaptation & Sustainable LivingRecently, I came across a fascinating article by Rosemary Crill on the V&A Blog, where she explores the symbiotic relationship between textiles and architecture in India's historical context. Her article revived my past explorations of how we could integrate this Traditional Knowledge System [TKS] into our modern built environment. Our heritage offers a vast knowledge repository, with numerous examples demonstrating the harmony of textiles and architectural spaces. From royal awnings (as seen in this post) in ancient palaces to transient cloth temples, these instances embody functional ingenuity coupled with aesthetic sophistication. I believe revisiting these traditions could help us devise dramatically innovative solutions for current architectural challenges, simultaneously celebrating our distinct cultural lineage.By reviving these practices, we can ingeniously address the outdoor-indoor junction and cater to the diverse climatic conditions of our subcontinent, adapting to our unique seasonal shifts - from scorching summers and wet monsoons to chilly winters. A thoughtful integration of textile elements into architectural designs can lead to structures that are adaptive, comfortable, and intimately tied to our culture.Furthermore, merging tradition with innovation opens untapped opportunities for sustainable practices. The textiles of tomorrow could be designed with environmentally friendly, durable, and less resource-intensive materials. Picture structures adorned with biodegradable textiles or smart fabrics featuring climate-responsive properties, thereby enhancing building resilience and reducing environmental footprint. This potential revival extends beyond residential to commercial buildings. Strategic embedding of textile extensions in modern Indian architecture can result in multi-functional spaces that flexibly adapt to our needs. Whether as temporary setups to celebrate a festival or pre-built components that adjust with the seasons, these textile transformations could animate our built environments.Much like how ancient palaces were incomplete without their resplendent draperies, our future buildings could embrace a new life with textile integrations. Let's delve into our heritage, foster sustainable innovation, and redefine Indian architecture for the 21st century.Stay tuned for my upcoming article, where I explore this captivating field of opportunities in more detail.https://lnkd.in/daJ6VvC2#IndianArchitecture #SustainableDesign #TextilesInArchitecture #Innovation #CulturalHeritage #V&A #AdaptiveDesign #ClimateResponsiveArchitecture #RevivingTraditions #SustainableTextiles#ModernHeritage Direct Create Sheela venkatraman Lunkad

Unfolding the Future: Harnessing Traditional Knowledge Systems for Modern InnovationThis video got me electrified with the locked potential of traditional knowladge systems in a world driven by rapid technological advancement and AI everything, its exciting to see the ancient art of origami is emerging as a powerful tool for scientific and engineering breakthroughs. Once a traditional craft, it is now inspiring advancements across various scientific disciplines from bionics to aviation. This video got me thinking that by exploring other traditional craft technologies like engraving, embossing, embroidery, weaving, carving - just like of origami, we can unlock new potentials in fabrication, construction, bioengineering, aerospace, and beyond. How can we unlock the profound implications of integrating Traditional Knowledge Systems (TKS) with modern science and engineering, showcasing the genius of centuries of human creativity and the transformative possibilities that arise from technology-led cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary collaborations?https://lnkd.in/gmiGCfCs#TraditionalKnowledgeSystems, #InnovationThroughCraft, #OrigamiScience, #WeavingInnovation, #EmbroideryEngineering, #InlayingTechnology, #CraftAndScience, #SustainableDesign, #CulturalInnovation, #FutureOfCraft #tradix Sheela venkatraman Lunkad Direct Create

Yesterday, I found myself staring at a remote corner of my car's dashboard, a spot I barely knew existed. The reason? The shocking announcement that Delhi had hit a temperature of 52.9°C. At first, I doubted it, thinking it might be some sensational newsmakers, especially active during election fever. It didn’t feel real!!In my mind, anything above 50°C in India should result in mandatory work-from-home policies or optional workdays. Our cities aren't designed for these extreme temperatures, especially for those who walk, cycle or ride bikes and scooters. So, 52.9°C felt like an emergency to me.Today, I had to go to Gurgaon. Determined to see it for myself, I kept an eye on the temperature on the dashbord. At 10:30 AM, I saw it hit 48°C, which was already shocking. But nothing could prepare me for my return journey from Gurgaon to Delhi on the highway. The dashboard recorded a staggering 57°C!As I saw this reading, also saw bikers with children, cyclists, and people walking in this heat. It made me think: either we are incredibly resilient, or a lot of people are going to fall ill from heatstroke today. Dont know about others but I have never seen these kinds of temperatures in my life, especially on a fully functional and active day in the city.If this is not proof, then what is... change is coming, and we need to revisit everything we do and calibrate everything we have to evolve for this coming change...#Heatwave #DelhiWeather #ClimateChange #StaySafe #WorkFromHome #getready

Performed at UNESCO International Jazz Day - Track 4 from SOUNDSCAPE Premier - "Floating" embodies the serenity and the intense spiritual connection one feels amidst the Himalayas. Each note played was a reflection of the peaceful yet profound presence of nature at Jilling Terraces, evoking a sense of floating through an ethereal world.🎹🪕 Witnessing Frank Bilsen on the piano, Debasmita Bhattacharya with her sarod, Julien Perez on the saxophone, and Karan Chitra Deshmukh on percussion was a transcendent experience. Their synergy created a SOUNDSCAPE that perfectly captured the essence of living above the clouds, surrounded by nature’s majesty.🙌 A huge thank you to the Netherlands Embassy in India, UNESCO India, Alliance Française de Delhi, Theo Groothuizen our Dutch Partner and all the musicians for their incredible work and passion.
