Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, July 1, 2024 (1)
Matt Brooks, a healthcare IT analyst from Fredericksburg, Virginia
Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, July 1, 2024 (2)

Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, July 1, 2024 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Welcome to the final month of Jeopardy! for Season 40. Today’s game features defending champion Cat Pisacano taking on New York’s Zoe Strassfield and Virginia’s Matt Brooks.

It’s also Canada Day up here in Canada—at least in most provinces—celebrated as the anniversary of Canadian Confederation in 1867. The holiday, however, is generally more subdued in Quebec (where the feast day of St. John the Baptist on June 24 is more celebrated as a national day) and my own residence of Newfoundland and Labrador. Newfoundland and Labrador has traditionally observed July 1 as Memorial Day; in World War I, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment suffered devastating losses at Beaumont Hamel on July 1, 1916 (the first day of the Battle of the Somme).

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Originally known as Children’s and Household Tales, or Kinder- und Hausmärchen in the original German, Grimm’s Fairy Tales is a famed anthology of fairy tales first published in 1812 by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. (The anthology has been published in new versions many times since.) Of the two stories mentioned in the clue, “The Booted Tom Cat” would be best known today as the “Puss In Boots” story.

Because there are people who insist on researching such matters themselves, and I suspect that if I do not post this, that certain people will start shoving Wikipedia in my face, it should be noted that folklorists within American academia have published translations of “Puss In Boots” (or, “The Booted Tom Cat”) that have their original text sourced from a Grimm anthology of Kinder- und Hausmärchen.

  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Cat $12,300 Matt $10,600 Zoe $1,600)

Cat: Standard cover bet over Matt is $8,901. (Actual bet: $8,901)

Matt: I would bet between $3,401 (in case Cat bets small) and $7,199 (to win on a Triple Stumper if Cat makes a cover bet). (Actual bet: $0)

Zoe: You’re only barely out of contention. I would go all-in here, just in case Cat overbets by a small amount. (Actual bet: $1,500)
