Howie was bom in Monroe on January 10 1912 daughter of the late Jennie Blair and James Alexander Stewart She attended Monroe Schools before entering Salem College She worked at the Monroe Hardware where her father had been president prior to her marriage to Samuel Stevens Howie Jr During WWII Mrs Howie served as a Gray Lady and was a faithful donor and volunteer at the blood bank She continued her volunteer service at Union Memorial Hospital for many years As a lifelong member of Central Methodist Church she shared her time and talents in numerous ways She was a member of the Lessie Ann Circle at the church Mrs Howie was a member and past regent of the John Foster Chapter daughters of the American Revolution a member and past president of Sorosis Book Club a member of Monroe Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy Waxhaws Chapter Daughters of the American Colonist and the Monroe Garden Club She was a kind and generous person who never met a stranger a loving mother grandmother and great grandmother who enjoyed doing for others especially family and friends she was known for her enduring spirit wit graciousness culinary skills love of Bridge and joy of life Mrs nine great-nieces nephews and several great-great nieces nephews A graveside service will be held 2 PM Thursday October 19 2000 at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Gastonia with the Rev Malcolm Ivey
