Die kanadische Alternative-Country-Band Elliott Brood hat gerade ein spannendes Projekt zum Abschluss gebracht. Ein Doppelalbum, dessen beide Teile etwas zeitversetzt auf den Markt kamen. Bereits im November letzten Jahres veröffentlichte das Trio das Album „Town“ (bis dato nur digital), jetzt ließ sie mit „Country“ den zweiten Part folgen. Derzeit stellt die Band, bestehend aus Mark Sasso, Casey Laforet und Stephen Pitkin, ihre beiden neuen Alben, aber natürlich auch jede Menge bandeigene Klassiker, live in Deutschland vor. Wir hatten vorab die Chance, die Band für unsere My-Soundtrack-Reihe zu gewinnen.

King Of Carrot Flowers Part 1 – Neutral Milk Hotel
The opening track from one of the greatest albums ever made.Everything changed for me when I first heard this song and this album.The very real subject matter Mangum is writing about mixed in with weirdness and spiritual elements makes this album incredibly unique.I was mesmerized when I first heard this song, especially the line, “
This song is simple, just acoustic and voice until the weird horn comes in.Such a great setup for the rest of the album which features the greatest fuzz/distortion tone of all time.
Der Eröffnungstrack eines der großartigsten Alben aller Zeiten. Als ich dieses Lied und dieses Album zum ersten Mal hörte, änderte sich für mich alles. Das sehr reale Thema, über das Mangum schreibt, gemischt mit seltsamen und spirituellen Elementen, macht dieses Album unglaublich einzigartig. Ich war fasziniert, als ich dieses Lied zum ersten Mal hörte, besonders von der Zeile: „…and your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking, and dad would dream of all the different ways to die, each one a little more than he would dare to try.“
Dieses Lied ist recht simpel gehalten, nur akustisch und Gesang, bis die seltsame Hupe zum Einsatz kommt.So ein tolles Setup für den Rest des Albums, das den besten Fuzz/Distortion-Sound aller Zeiten bietet.
Six Days On The Road – Flying Burrito Brothers
Road songs are the absolute best and this is the best of the best.Dave Dudley’s original is fine but the Burritos OWN this song at least to me.Chris Hillman’s bass on this track is the heart and soul and the pedal steel is other worldly.This is the song that made me fall in love with pedal steel guitar and I have to be careful not to put it on every single thing I ever record.It’s such a great example of the county rock sound in its infancy.This one should always be played louder than what you were previously listening to.
Road-Songs sind die absolut Besten und der hier ist das Beste vom Besten. Das Original von Dave Dudley ist in Ordnung, aber zumindest für mich ownen die Burritos dieses Lieds. Chris Hillmans Bass auf diesem Track ist das Herz und die Seele und die Pedal Steel ist einfach überirdisch. Dies ist der Song, der in mir die Liebe zur Pedal-Steel-Gitarre weckte und ich muss aufpassen, dass ich sie nicht auf alles packe, was ich aufnehme. Das Lied ist ein großartiges Beispiel für den Country-Rock-Sound in seinen Kinderschuhen. Es sollte immer lauter gespielt werden als das, was Sie zuvor gehört haben.
Faith To Arise – Terry Reid
The late and absolutely great Dallas Good from The Sadies introduced me to Terry Reid.I had never heard of him until a couple years ago.The song „Faith To Arise“ has the best little acoustic guitar lick paired with an incredible singer and great songwriting.It sounds like a Black Crowes hit 25 years before they were even a band.I love homesick songs and this one is a great one.There’s even a jazzy little pre chorus that I originally hated but have come to love as it sets up one my favorite choruses of any song I’ve ever heard.
Der verstorbene und absolut großartige Dallas Good von The Sadies machte mich mit Terry Reid bekannt. Bis vor ein paar Jahren hatte ich noch nie von ihm gehört. Der Song „Faith To Arise“ hat den besten kleinen Akustikgitarren-Lick, gepaart mit einem unglaublichen Sänger und großartigem Songwriting. Es klingt wie ein Black Crowes-Hit, 25 Jahre bevor sie überhaupt eine Band waren. Ich liebe Heimweh-Lieder und dieses hier ist großartig. Es gibt sogar einen jazzigen, kleinen Vorchor, den ich ursprünglich gehasst, aber inzwischen lieben gelernt habe, da er in einen meiner liebsten Refrains überhaupt überleitet.
Choctaw Bingo – James McMurtry
This is Dylan style lyrical marathon that I worship.In this track McMurtry paints a picture of a southern redneck family gathering and introduces us to all the “family” that are coming.It’s such an incredible bit of storytelling set to a repeating little guitar riff that does not change ave for a couple leads when there’s space between the sprawling lyrics.The live version is the best and starts with the greatest song intro I know of:
“We’ll start this next set with a song about the north Texas / southern Oklahoma crystal methamphetamine industry.“

Das ist ein textlicher Marathon im Dylan-Stil, den ich verehre. In diesem Titel malt uns McMurtry das Bild eines Südstaaten-Familientreffens und stellt uns die ganze „Familie“ vor, die da kommt. Es handelt sich um eine unglaubliche Erzählkunst mit einem sich wiederholenden kleinen Gitarrenriff, das sich bis auf ein paar Leads nicht verändert, wenn zwischen den ausufernden Lyrics Platz bleibt. Die Live-Version ist die beste. Sie beginnt mit dem großartigsten Song-Intro, das ich kenne:

City Of New Orleans – Arlo Guthrie
This song was written by Steve Goodman, but I like many know the Arlo Guthrie version.I love good storytelling and this song is one of my earliest memories of recognizing the story in song.It’s one ofmy dad’s favorites and I heard it a lot as a kid.If you want a singable chorus, look no further than this song.It’s such a beautiful portrait of America and any train song is good in my book.A couple years ago I got my brother and sister and myself to record a version for my dad.
Dieses Lied wurde eigentlich von Steve Goodman geschrieben, aber viele kennen eher die Version von Arlo Guthrie. Ich liebe gutes Storytelling und dieser Song war einer der ersten, in dem ich eine Story erkannte. Die Nummer ist eines der Lieblingslieder meines Vaters, ich habe es als Kind daher oft gehört. Wer auf mitsingbare Refrains steht, liegt mit diesem Lied genau richtig. Es zeichnet so ein wunderschönes Porträt von Amerika und jedes Lied über Züge ist meiner Meinung nach gut. Vor ein paar Jahren habe ich meinen Bruder, meine Schwester und mich dazu gebracht, eine Version des Songs für meinen Vater aufzunehmen.
