Casual Thanksgiving Table Setting in the Kitchen:

An alternative to the “kid’s table”…

Even though we have a formal dining room, we also use our kitchen table for Thanksgiving dinner. With our large extended family, there’s just not enough space to fit everyone in one room. So in the kitchen, I set a more casual Thanksgiving table setting…

Casual Flowers for a Casual Table:

There’s no need to spend a ton of money on a centerpiece for casual Thanksgiving table setting…

For my Thanksgiving centerpiece, I just bought a bouquet of grocery store flowers and placed them in a simple galvanized metal container I bought at Homegoods last spring. Inside the container, the flowers are sitting in a wide vase with water. I just made sure I cut them to the right height so they would fill out the top and look full. Last time I used the container, I just plopped in a potted hydrangea which was even easier.

Repeating the Colors on the Table:

Since I loved the fall colors of the flowers, I decided to repeat those colors on the table…

Luckily, I still had my old Macintosh – Pier One dishes from many years ago. For a splash of red, I added one simple apple to each place setting. If you love decorating with apples in the fall, be sure to read myapple decorating ideas.

Then to repeat the galvanized metal, I added my new chargers to each place setting. In my opinion, the galvanized metal really adds a casual feel to the table…plus they seem to be so popular this year!

My navy gingham cork place mats pick up some of the blue from the plates and also help to keep the table casual.

Neutrals and Textures for a Casual Table:

Natural accessories add to the fall vibe…

For the table runner, I used my old stand-by burlap one. It really does seem to work with everything and adds some nice texture to the table.

For even more texture, the wheat bundles work perfectly. Recently, I used them in my fall dining room. Of course, the white pumpkins and the wooden candlesticks add more neutrals colors and texture to the table. When I decorate with colors, I like to balance them out with some neutral pieces to keep everything from looking too busy.

Another way to keep the table casual is to mix in different glasses at each end. Although in this case, I didn’t really have a choice. Since I only have four of the amber colored glasses, I had to come up with something different for extra settings. Luckily, on a casual table setting, you really don’t even notice. In fact, it can look intentional.

Another way to add texture is on the napkin “ring”. For my napkin, I simply rolled up a white napkin and tied a piece of twine around a sprig of sage. After all, we do cook with sage on Thanksgiving so it’s a subtle nod to the holiday. Plus, the color of the sage blends well with the plates…actually maybe a little too well. From a distance, the apple and sage almost blend in too much…oh well.

In the rest of the kitchen, I repeated some wheat bundles, white pumpkins and galvanized metal to coordinate with the table. Since we keep our fall decor up until the day after Thanksgiving, I don’t have to worry about mixing in any Christmas decor in the background!

As you can see, our kitchen gets a ton of morning light. Unfortunately, when we eat our Thanksgiving dinner the sun won’t be shining in here…maybe we should do a Thanksgiving breakfast instead -ha!

And here is an afternoon shot to the family room on the other side. Maybe this year we will light a fire on Thanksgiving to make it extra cozy in here.

Speaking of fires, yes I know my candles are a little close to that dried out wheat. Don’t worry, I don’t plan on lighting them. If I keep the table set this way, I will probably buy some battery operated candles.
