Tybee Island is a a great place for a low key beach getaway. There is plenty to do to keep you entertained but not overwhelmed. It offers beautiful beaches and outdoor activities, great unique restaurants, interesting shops and lots of historical sites.

How To Get To Tybee Island

It is easy to get to Tybee Island, either by flying or drive in.

To Fly: The closest airport to Tybee Island is Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. It is located about 30 miles away. And with many major airlines flying into SAV, it will be easy to find a flight.

To Drive: You can get to Tybee Island from either Interstate 95 or Interstate 16. Located on the Georgia coast, Tybee Island is about 25 minutes from Savannah Georgia. There is only one road to get you to the island. So While driving be on the look out for cargo ships passing through the Savannah River. They are so big you can see them in the distance.

The visitor center is always a good starting point when exploring a new place. The Tybee Island Visitor Center is located at the first traffic light once you get on the island. It is a coral colored building to the right and open 7 days a week. So stop in and see what going on in town. You can download or order your free visitors guide HERE. This is a great way to plan out all the things to do in Tybee Island for adults.

1. Enjoy The Wide Sandy Beaches Of Tybee Island

There are 5 miles of public beaches to choose from while visiting Tybee Island. So you can hang out at whatever beach is best for you or check them all out!

North Beach: Located on the north side of the island. This beach is home to the Tybee Lighthouse and North Beach Bar and Grill.

South Beach: This area includes the downtown area of Tybee Island and the Tybee Pier. It is considered the best beach to watch the sunrise.

Mid Beach: A less crowded beach option between North and South beach. Here you will find the only beach front restaurant, The Deck Beach Bar and Kitchen.

Back River Beach: Known as the islands secret beach and best beach to watch the sunset. Located on the back side of the island.

Little Tybee Island: The only way to get to Little Tybee is by boat or kayak. So if you want to experience a remote beach location, consider Little Tybee.

Located in the downtown area at the end of Tybrisa Street. The Tybee Island fishing pier is open daily and is free to walk out on. There are sitting ares, concessions and restrooms. Its a great place to fish, people watch or just take in the views.

3. Climb To The Top Of Tybee Lighthouse

The Tybee Island Light Station is located near the Savannah River at North Beach in the historic neighborhood of Fort Screven. You might wonder why this lighthouse is located so far from shore? Well For $12 you can learn about the history of the lighthouse, climb to the top and find out how any times it had to be rebuilt. Your admission ticket also includes the Tybee Museum in Battery Garland across the street.

4. Shop at Seaside Sisters

Seaside Sisters gift shop is a great place for shopping. With a fun selection of home decor, jewelry, books, yard art and more you will be sure to find the perfect Tybee Island treasure to take home. We found this super cute ornament as our keepsake. If interested, I found a similar one here.

5. Rent A Golf Cart Or Bicycle

Tybee Island is a small island. It is only a few miles from end to end and very bike friendly. We had our bikes with us and road all over the island. There are clearly marked bike paths off the main road. It is easy to get around and also get some exercise.

Bike rentals are available on the island as well as golf cart rentals. Many places have golf cart parking. If you plan to drive your car, keep in mind you will need to pay for parking in most public lots.

6. Tybee Island Marine Science Center

Located near the Tybee Pier, the Marine Sceince Center is the best place to learn about Tybee Island marine life. With a focus on education, conservation and research there are many ways to enjoy the marine center. They offer walk and talks, exhibits, marsh treks and more. Check the calendar and sign up on the website.

7. Grab A Coffee At Tybean Art Coffee Bar

For a coffee and art experience, head over to Tybean Coffee. They serve delicious premium coffee drinks and a few food items. After you grab your coffee walkover to the Shoppes of Tybee Oaks to find some great local art in the shops. It’s located in the same parking lot, so you cant miss it.

8. Explore Around By Kayak

The only way to get to Little Tybee Island is by boat or kayak. At Sea Kayak Georgia you can either rent a kayak or join a tour to visit Little Tybee. They also offer canoe and SUP rentals and tours. Kayaking is a great way to explore Tybee by water. If you go out on your own, just make sure to watch the tides.

One of the most romantic things to do on Tybee Island is watching the sunset. And being on the water is the best way to experience it. There are many charters offering sunset cruises. So book a sunset cruise, grab your favorite beverage and enjoying a beautiful evening on the water. It is a great way to end a fun filled day on the island.

10. Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours

There are many activities to enjoy at Lazaretto Creek Marina. But one of the favorites is Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours. This one hour scenic boat tour is more than just dolphins. The cruise includes views of the Tybee Lighthouse, Corkspur Lighthouse, Hilton Head and Daufuskie Islands, Fort Pulaski and more. For only $25 you will be educated and entertained!

Captain Mike’s also offers one hour sunset cruises. These are very popular, and book up quickly. So try to make your reservation well in advance.

11. Catch A Fish On Tybee Island

Tybee Island has great year-round fishing. You will however need a GA license to fish on Tybee Island. There are 3 local fishing piers to chose from: Tybee Island Pier, Back River Fishing Pier and Lazaretto Creek Marina Pier. And if you didn’t bring your gear, no problem. Stop by Rip Tide Bait and Tackle Shop at the Tybee Pier and they can help you out.

If you prefer to get into deeper waters to fish there are many Tybee Island Charters to choose from. And after your day on the water, if you don’t feel like cooking, these great places will cook your catch: Coco’s Sunset Grill, Sting Ray’s Seafood and Flying Fish Bar and Grill.

12. Yoga on The Beach

With some yoga on the beach you can mix in a little mind body activity. Grab your beach towel and join Tybee Yoga on the beach Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is a great way to start or end your day. Classes are offered March through November. Check the website for times and locations.

13. Visit Historic Savannah

If you have not been to the area before, then you need to spend a day exploring the city of Savannah. There are so many fun things to see and do in historic Savannah. There are parks, museums, monuments, homes, stores and so many restaurants to enjoy during your visit. If you enjoy a good ghost tour, there are a few to choose from.

And make sure to visit the river front area and walk around and inside the Marriott Hotel, they have an amazing display of rocks and gems.

If you plan to visit Fort Pulaski, remember to bring your national parks pass so you wont have to pay to enter. We really enjoyed exploring the fort and learning about the history and were both impressed and happy it was something we did not overlook.

Fort Pulaski is located on Corkspur Island between Savannah and Tybee Island. At the fort you can explore through the remaining buildings and learn about its use during the Civil War and by the Union Army. You will see where the canyons were fired, walk through the prison of war cell and lookout from the top of the fort. It was very interesting, there was a lot to see and it was definitely worth the visit.

15. Day Trip To Hilton Head Island

If you want to do some exploring, then consider going to Hilton Head. Even though you can see the island from North beach, it will take you an hour to drive there.

Hilton Head is located in neighboring state of South Carolina. Known for its 12 miles of pristine beaches and world class golf courses. Hilton Head Island continues to be a a top vacation destination. So if you have some additional time to explore around, you may want to drive over to Hilton Head.

16. Tybee Post Theater

This historic building was constructed as a movie house for the army soldiers back in 1930. After being dark for many years it reopened in 2015. The Tybee Post Theatre is enjoyed by locals and visitors. You can grab a ticket to a movie, listen to live music, watch a theatrical production or comedy show and so much more. 17. Attend The Beach Bum Parade

This annual events takes place the weekend before Memorial Day and is a kick off to summer. The parade runs all the way down Butler Avenue. It is a huge water gun fight. So if you want to participate make sure to come prepared with your water guns, towels and extra water. Be prepared to get really wet and have some fun!

Where To Stay On Tybee Island:

Tybee Island has a blend of hotels, inns, airbnb and only one campground. April through September are the most popular times to visit this beach destination. Although the off season November to February is also a pleasant time to visit. And with a lot less crowds, so you can experience Tybee like a local.

Desoto Beach Hotel: This is Tybee Islands only beachfront hotel.

Surf Song Bed & Breakfast: Only 300 steps from the beach. This old Victorian beach house is the perfect place for a romantic getaway.

River’s End Campground: This is the only campground on Tybee Island. It is located about 10 minutes walking distance from the beach. They have tent and RV sites. And also have cottage rentals. This is where we stayed with our Airstream.

Restaurants To Visit On Tybee Island

Huc A Poos: The eclectic open air restaurant is great for pizza and a beer. Insider tip: the slices are huge and only $5 with as many toppings as you want.

Deck Beach Bar: The perfect place for dinner and or drinks with a view. It is the only beachfront restaurant on the island.

Sea Wolf: This super cute restaurant has great food and drinks. With a cozy ambiance, its a great place for a romantic dinner option. Indoor and outdoor seating available.

Original Crab Shack: For all things seafood, this Low-country boil is a great choice. So many seafood platters to choose from. They have some other options too. Cool views of the water by and day and unique lighting decor by night. And don’t miss the lagoon with the baby alligators.

Wet Willies: Best place if you are looking for a frozen adult beverage after a day on South Beach.

Sundae Cafe: A favorite for locals and visitors. This place came highly recommended but unfortunately we didn’t get to try it. It has high ratings, looks great and we will have to stop in next time!
