11TH REGION BASEBALL: Indians, Eagles set for match-ups with unfamiliar opponents (2024)

The Indians (23-11) and Eagles (14-17) are set to renew old rivalries on Monday in the opening round of the 11th Region Tournament.

Madison Central will play host to Franklin County (16-19), while Madison Southern hits the road to take on Lexington Catholic (23-11).

Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m.

Monday's other first-round games include: Tates Creek at Henry Clay and Scott County at Great Crossing.

The semifinals are set for Tuesday at Bryan Station, with the title game scheduled for Wednesday in Lexington.

Central and Franklin County have met just once in the past decade. The Indians beat the Flyers, 8-4, in the 2022 11th Region Tournament.

Southern's last match-up with Lexington Catholic was on April 19, 2013.

The Indians rolled to a sixth-straight 44th District Championship last week, beat Model Laboratory, 9-1, and Madison Southern, 5-0.

In the title game, Sam Coleman (three innings) and Eli Metcalfe (four innings) combined to allow just one hit and three walks, while Keith Stewart had a two-run double and scored a run.

Metcalfe earned the win to move to 8-0 on the season. In 46 2/3 innings pitched, the senior has given up just three earned runs (six total runs), eight walks and 22 hits. He has a 0.44 ERA with 50 strikeouts.

Coleman is 3-0 on the season and has allowed only nine earned runs in 26 1/3 innings pitched.

Stewart leads the Indians in hits (28), RBI (30), doubles (11) and is tied for the team lead in triples (3 - with Nick Pietromonaco) and home runs (3 - Landen Broaddus).

Central has seven other players with 20 or more hits - Broaddus (27), Cannon Spivey (27), Carson Travis (26), Coleman (24), Pietromonaco (23), Druw Hess (22) and Parker Mullins (21).

The Indians have advanced to at least the semifinals of the 11th Region Tournament in five-straight seasons, winning championships in 2018 and 2022.

Franklin County has lost 11-straight games in the 11th Region Tournament. The Flyers haven't moved past the first round since 2009.

Franklin County topped Western Hills, 6-0, last week in the 41st District Tournament before falling to Great Crossing, 14-5, in the title game.

The Flyers started the season by losing 12 of their first 15 games and had a three-game losing streak in early May, but did have a regular-season win over Great Crossing.

Franklin County have three starters hitting well over .300 - Jacob Golson (.374), Cameron McDonald (.351) and Jeremy Walters (.343). Golson also has five home runs and 32 RBI on the season. Kaelin Farr has 13 doubles on the season.

The Flyers also have two pitchers with five wins - Swayer Popp (5-1, 1 save, 2.85 ERA) and Farr (5-3, 1 save, 1.68 ERA).

The winner of the Franklin County-Madison Central game will face either Tates Creek (15-16) or Henry Clay (24-13) in the semifinals.

Southern earned a spot in the 11th Region Tournament for the third-straight season with a 16-1 win over Berea Community last week in the 44th District Tournament. The Eagles had 11 hits in the victory as Caleb Cobb went 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI. Walker Marcum and Zach Morgeson also had two hits each.

Trey Helton leads Southern in hits (36) and RBI (22). Catcher Griffin Back has a team-best 12 doubles and is hitting .290 with 21 RBI. Zach Hudson (.300, 17 RBI) leads the Eagles in stolen bases (22).

Braden Hudson (22), Aiden Lilly (26) and Morgeson (21) each have more than 20 hits, while Morgeson and Zach Hudson are tied for the team lead in homers (2).

Helton and Morgeson each have four wins on the mound this season.

Helton has a 3.44 ERA in 61 innings pitched, with 55 strikeouts and only 14 walks. Morgeson has worked 35 1/3 innings with a 5.15 ERA.

Southern's last win in the 11th Region Tournament was 2019.

Catholic will carry a five-game winning streak into Monday's match-up with the Eagles in Lexington. The Knights topped LCA, 7-4, in the 43rd District Tournament semifinals, then beat Tates Creek, 6-2, in the championship.

Bennie Lawrence and Brady Wasik each had two hits and an RBI in the title game, while Pierre Kauffmann earned the complete-game victory, allowing five hits.

On the season, Owen Jenkins leads Catholic in hits (38) and batting average (.469) and is tied for the team lead in home runs (four - with Zach Grigalis). The Knights have a total of 14 homers (from six players),

Grigalis has a team-best 30 RBI.

Brody Rogers is Catholic's ace. The senior left-hander is 7-0 on the season with a 1.21 ERA. He has allowed only nine earned runs and 44 hits in 52 innings.

Burkley Bounds and Kauffmann each have five wins on the season for the Knights as well.

The winner of the Southern-Catholic game will face either Great Crossing or Scott County in the semifinals.
